What is it?
Alpha pinene is a natural terpene compound found in the oil of many species of coniferous trees, especially pine trees. It can also be present in the essential oil of plants like rosemary, and is also found in cannabis products, particularly marijuana.
How do I avoid it?
Skin contact with alpha pinene is required for it to cause a rash. Discontinuation of exposure to products containing alpha pinene should result in improvement and/or resolution of your dermatitis. By law, all products made in the U.S. for topical use have the ingredients listed either on the product package or the box that contains it, so check the labeling of your skin care products for this ingredient. If there is not enough information, ask your pharmacist or retailer, or contact the company directly. At work, request a
Safety Data Sheet (SDS) to help identify potential sources of exposure.
Plants that contain alpha pinene can be found worldwide. Dust or spores from these plants can be challenging to avoid. If your rash is primarily in exposed areas of the skin (outside of clothing), rinsing/bathing in a shower after outdoor activities may be helpful.
