What is it?
Reactive textile dyeing is a method for the coloration of cellulose and other natural fibers, including cotton, flax, and wool.
How can I avoid it?
Because reactive dyes are used to dye multiple different kinds of fabric, it is difficult to recommend a specific type of fabric to wear. However, reactive dyes are very water-soluble, so they can be easily washed out of fabrics to prevent dermatitis. It is, therefore, crucial for individuals allergic to reactive dyes to wash all fabrics several times before initial use. It may also be helpful to wear loose-fitting clothing rather than tight-fitting clothing.
Allergy to reactive textile dyes may cause allergic conjunctivitis, allergic rhinitis, or occupational asthma for those exposed to the dyes during textile production.
Uses:
- Dye for multiple different kinds of fabrics and textiles:
- cellulose fibers such as cotton, linen, hemp, bamboo
- modified cellulose fibers such as rayon, lyocell (Tencel), modal
- silk, wool
- nylon
- Paints
- Plastic
