What is it?
Titanium (III) nitride is a chemical used to coat metal alloys such as titanium, steel, carbide, and aluminum. Due to being an extremely hard material, it is used to improve edge retention and corrosion resistance on tools and implants.

How can I avoid it?
Avoidance requires reading the product labels, package inserts, Safety Data Sheets (SDS), and on occasion, direct communication with the manufacturer.

Uses:
  • Coating applied to:
    • Surgical implants (such as artificial joints) and surgical tools
    • Dental implants (such as abutments)
    • Machining tools, drill bits, and milling cutters
    • Costume jewelry (gold colored)
    • Automotive trim
    • Plumbing fixtures
    • Door handles and hardware
    • Firearm components
    • Bicycle and motorcycle suspension systems
    • Electronic circuitry
Other names for titanium (III) nitride:
